The upcoming 2025 Toyota 4Runner is set to be a completely redesigned SUV, featuring new powertrains, chassis, and overall design. The current 4Runner model lags behind its competitors in terms of fuel efficiency, ride and handling, technology, and powertrain capabilities. We have great expectations for the next-generation Toyota 4Runner to have a turbo-four basic engine and a strong V-6 hybrid to compete with body-on-frame SUVs like the Ford Bronco. Once the next generation appears, an all-electric 4Runner will follow suit.

Toyota 4Runner: The SUV America Still Loves

Despite its advanced years, the Toyota 4Runner is still a very popular SUV. Toyota sold over 120,000 4Runners last year, placing it between the Jeep Wrangler and Ford Bronco. That’s a good amount considering the 4Runner hasn’t changed much, but it’s down from 2021. The new generation will be crucial as the famous off-roader enters a new age with electric alternatives. We expect the 2025 Toyota 4Runner to resemble the 2024 Toyota Tacoma, which will appear later this year. The new 4Runner will feature a redesigned interior and appearance.

Toyota’s worldwide TNGA-F architecture, a modular body-on-frame platform, will underpin the next-generation 4Runner. In the US, the Toyota Tundra, Lexus LX, and Sequoia employ this design. The next Hilux, 2024 Tacoma, and worldwide Land Cruiser will use this platform.

2025 4Runner SUV Powertrain

The Lexus NX 350’s 2.4-liter turbo-four, which produces 275 horsepower and 317 lb-ft of torque, may power the 2025 4Runner. A detuned version of the Tundra and Sequoia’s i-Force Max Twin Turbo V-6 Hybrid engine might power the next 4Runner. The Toyota Crown’s 340-hp 2.4-liter four-cylinder Hybrid Max powerplant is another option. We anticipate the 4Runner to be electrified, since Toyota has just made both the Sienna and Sequoia hybrid-only. We anticipate the new 4Runner’s suspension to be more comfortable and fuel-efficient. New transmissions will improve off-road performance and replace the five-speed automatic.

We are hoping that an all-electric version will be released soon after launching the new 4Runner. Toyota’s new CEO, Koji Sato, has been cautious about EVs. Sato-san has mentioned rethinking EV manufacturing, thus an all-electric 4Runner is possible. While a Tacoma EV is expected, we haven’t seen a 4Runner EV in any of Toyota’s forthcoming models, which makes sense considering how much they share.
