How Much Does it Cost to Replace a Hellcat Red Key?

Expect roughly $225 to $300 all in through a mobile locksmith, or more at a dealer. The bigger question is what you are actually buying: the red key is the difference between about 500 horsepower and all of it, and with the Challenger and Charger out of production, these fobs are no longer being made.

What the red key actually does

This is the part most people searching for a replacement price do not know, and it matters more than the cost.

Every Hellcat left the factory with two fobs. The black key limits engine output to roughly 500 horsepower. The red key unlocks the full figure, which is 707 horsepower on a standard Hellcat and more on the Redeye, Super Stock and Demon variants.

It also changes more than the power cap. The red key gives you full throttle response, the complete transmission and suspension calibration, and access to the performance settings in the drive modes. The black key is a valet mode with a horsepower number attached.

Your three options, cheapest first

1. Buy the fob online and have it programmed locally

The cheapest route. A red key fob bought online typically costs $120 to $150. You then need the key code and PIN, which you obtain from a Stellantis dealership with proof of ownership, and a locksmith to program it.

Total is usually $165 to $265 depending on what your locksmith charges. The catch is that you need to still have at least one working key for this to be straightforward.

2. Mobile automotive locksmith

The right answer if you have lost all your keys. A mobile locksmith comes to the car, which avoids a tow, and the $225 to $300 range generally covers the fob, the key code, processing and the call-out.

Confirm before booking that the locksmith can handle Stellantis products specifically and, on a 2018 or newer car, that they can deal with the security module described below.

3. Dealership

The most expensive and the most certain. A dealer has factory tooling and access, which removes every complication. If your car is newer, or if a locksmith has already tried and failed, this is where you end up.

The complication on 2018 and newer cars

Worth knowing before you call anyone. From the 2018 model year, Stellantis fitted a Security Gateway Module, usually shortened to SGW, which restricts aftermarket access to the vehicle’s diagnostic network.

The practical effect is that an independent locksmith cannot simply plug in and program a key the way they could on older cars. They need to be registered for authorised access or use a bypass, and not every locksmith is set up for it. On an older Hellcat this is a non-issue. On a later one it is the first question to ask.

Can you add a red key if the car never had one?

Every Hellcat was delivered with a red key, so a car without one has lost it rather than never had it. Replacements have to be programmed to that specific vehicle, so you cannot buy a red key from another car and expect it to work.

Be careful with online listings that offer red keys cheaply with no programming. A fob is a piece of plastic until it is coded to your car, and a fob that cannot be programmed is worth nothing.

Why this is worth doing properly now
