Hits: seating for eight in real comfort, a huge panoramic roof, and enough USB ports that nobody fights.

Misses: the ride can get firm on broken pavement, and the infotainment menu structure takes learning.

3. Toyota Grand Highlander

Starting around $45,000

This is no longer an upcoming model, which an earlier version of this page had it filed as. It arrived for 2024 and it fixed the one thing everybody complained about with the regular Highlander, which was that the third row was a punishment.

All three rows fit adults, the cargo area behind row three is usable rather than symbolic, and the Hybrid MAX powertrain makes 362 horsepower while still returning respectable economy.

Hits: the most genuinely usable interior in the segment, strong hybrid options, and Toyota’s reliability record.

Misses: priced well above the regular Highlander, and dull to drive in a way that will not bother most buyers at all.

4. Honda Pilot

Starting around $40,000

Honda gave the Pilot proper road presence in its latest generation and it works. This is a family SUV designed by people who have loaded a family into an SUV, with a removable middle seat in row two, sensible storage, and a quiet highway gait.

Hits: adult-friendly third row, smooth and quiet on the interstate, and the TrailSport trim is more capable off pavement than it has any right to be.

Misses: cabin materials are functional rather than impressive, and the infotainment lags the Korean rivals.

5. Toyota Highlander

Starting around $40,000

The safe answer, and there is nothing wrong with the safe answer. The hybrid returns around 35 mpg, which is remarkable for something this size, and resale value is among the best in the class.

Hits: excellent fuel economy from the hybrid, a deep standard safety suite, and trims to fit almost any budget.

Misses: the third row is for children, full stop. If adults will sit back there regularly, buy the Grand Highlander instead.

6. Ford Explorer

Starting around $40,000

The Explorer is the one here built on a rear-wheel-drive architecture, which gives it towing capability and a more balanced feel than the front-drive-based competition. It also comes in more flavors than anything else on this list, including the ST performance version.

Hits: strong towing, multiple powertrains, and rear-drive underpinnings that make it more interesting to drive.

Misses: below-average fuel economy, and interior quality varies noticeably between trims.

7. Volkswagen Atlas

8. Lincoln Aviator

The most interesting luxury pick here, because Lincoln stopped trying to be a Cadillac and started doing something of its own. German engineering, a beautifully built cabin, and Quattro all-wheel drive. The Q7 is the best-driving vehicle in this group by a clear margin, with body control that makes it feel considerably smaller than it is.

Hits: superb interior quality, strong powertrain range topped by the SQ7’s V8, and generous standard technology.

Misses: the third row is the tightest here, and the ride gets brittle on the larger wheel options. Option packages are expensive.

10. Cadillac XT6

Starting around $52,000

The XT6 exists for people who want an Escalade without the Escalade’s footprint or price, and it does that job adequately without ever feeling special. It is quiet, comfortable, and well equipped.

Hits: premium feel in a manageable size, plenty of charging ports, and a comfortable interior.

Misses: underwhelming for the money next to a loaded Telluride, and the third row is tight. Cadillac has been reshaping its lineup around electric models, so check current availability before setting your heart on one.

11. Mazda CX-90

Important correction here, because this page previously listed a 2024 Mazda CX-9 and no such vehicle exists. The CX-9 ended production after 2023 and was replaced by the CX-90, which is a substantially different and better vehicle: rear-wheel-drive-based, with an inline-six engine and a plug-in hybrid option.

The reason to buy either is the same. If you care how an SUV drives, Mazda remains the answer in this segment.

Hits: handles like something much smaller, standard all-wheel drive, and an interior that punches above the badge.

Misses: third-row and cargo space trail the class leaders, and the transmission can be hesitant at low speed.

How to choose

Sit in the third row before you buy. Not look at it. Sit in it, with the second row set where your family will actually use it. This single test eliminates about half the segment for most buyers.

Check cargo space with all three rows up. The impressive number manufacturers advertise is with row three folded, which defeats the purpose. Behind-third-row volume is the figure that matters.

Be honest about towing. If you are not actually towing, the towing-focused models cost you fuel economy for nothing.

GMC Typhoon (1991–1993)

The GMC Typhoon was a high-performance SUV that the company made from 1992 to 1993. On the GMC Syclone it was based, and the engine was a tweaked version of the Jimmy’s Vortec engine. It had a 4.3 L LB4 V6 engine that made 280 hp and 360 lb-ft of power. The stock suspensions were changed to be more sporty, the brakes were improved, and the Typhoon had a limited-slip rear differential. It was known that the Typhoon could speed up quickly, going from 0 to 60 mph in 5.3 seconds.

From 1992 to 1993, GMC manufactured a high-performance sport utility vehicle (SUV) known as the GMC Typhoon. The GMC Syclone served as the basis for this vehicle, which featured a modified version of the Vortec engine that was also present in the standard Jimmy. With a 4.3-liter LB4 V6 engine, the Typhoon was capable of producing 280 horsepower and 360 pound-feet of torque. Additionally, it was equipped with a four-wheel-drive system and a four-speed automatic transmission. The standard suspensions of the Typhoon were replaced with sport suspensions, upgraded brakes were installed, and a limited-slip rear differential was installed.

Chevy Impala SS (1994-1996)

The Chevrolet Impala SS was a high-performance version of the Caprice, based on the Caprice 9C1 police package. With flared fenders, an aggressive stance, and an optional factory-installed phone and CD changer, the 500E redefined the boundaries of performance sedans in the 1990s.

Ford F-150 SVT Lightning (1993-1995 & 1999)

We all remember seeing Brian pull up with what looked like a regular F150 in Fast and the Furious. And we didn’t think anything of it until we understood that it was no farm truck, it was a beast with a bed. Ford’s SVT Lightning, introduced in 1993, redefined truck performance. With a formidable 240 horsepower and 340 lb-ft of torque, it not only outpaced regular F-150s but rivaled sports cars in speed. The lightweight design and distinctive wiring set the SVT Lightning apart, making it a force to be reckoned with. Ford built just over 28,000 second-generation SVT F-150 Lightnings with the aero body (and flareside bed) that came with the ’97 truck between 1999 and 2004.

Dodge Spirit R/T (1992)

The 1992 Dodge Spirit R/T is a high-performance sedan known for its 224-horsepower four-cylinder engine, making it the fastest sedan built in America at the time. It was a sleeper car with a significant power boost compared to the standard Spirit model. Manufactured in Mexico with an engineering assist from Lotus, the 1992 Dodge Spirit R/T midsize sedan proudly claimed the title of the fastest sedan in America. Ford Taurus SHO (1990-1999)

The 1992–1993 Acura Integra GS-R sedan stood as an early adopter of Honda’s VTEC system. Exclusively offered with a five-speed manual transmission, this unassuming sedan relied on a 1.7-liter I-4 producing 160 hp and 117 lb-ft of torque. Its somewhat boring appearance hid its impressive power, with production limited to fewer than 5,000 examples for the North American market.

Toyota Previa S/C (1994–1995)

Supercharger PLUS a Minivan, what could go wrong? Nothing, because the Toyota Previa S/C defied minivan norms by incorporating a Roots supercharger. Top Sleeper Cars Under $5k

This is the tier where you buy on condition, not on model. A well-kept example of the third-best car here beats a neglected example of the best one every time.

Ford Crown Victoria (1988-2011)

The default answer, and it holds up. A 4.6-liter V8 making 200 to 250 horsepower depending on year and package, body-on-frame construction, rear-wheel drive, and a solid rear axle that responds well to cheap modification.

It is not quick in stock form. What it is instead is durable, easy to work on, tolerant of abuse, and utterly invisible. Look for a P71 Police Interceptor if you can find one that wasn’t beaten to death, since it came with a better cooling system, stiffer suspension, and a limited-slip differential.

Ownership reality: About as cheap as motoring gets. Parts are everywhere and any mechanic in America has worked on one.

Volvo 850 T5 or V70 T5 (1993-2000)

A boxy Swedish wagon with a turbocharged five-cylinder making around 222 horsepower, and one of the most satisfying disguises available at any price. It looks like the vehicle of someone who has given up. It responds extremely well to a tune.

Ownership reality: Mechanically tough, electrically less so. Budget for cooling system and suspension bushing work.

Honda Accord V6 (1998-2002)

200 horsepower in a car that shipped in silver to roughly every driveway in the country. It won’t scare anyone, but it will hold together forever and it’s quicker than the four-cylinder Accords everyone assumes it is.

Ownership reality: The best of the bunch. Watch for automatic transmission failures on this generation, which are common and expensive. The manual cars avoid the issue entirely.

Mazda Miata MX-5 (1990–1997)

We know what you’re thinking: “A Mazda Miata? A sleeper?” But hear us out here—while Miatas might not be the fastest in a straight line, they are known for their incredible handling. The early models of MX-5 offer loads of fun and are very affordable.

The best part? You can find plenty with less than 100k miles on them, making these cars reliable options too.

Ford Taurus SHO (1989–1995)

The purest sleeper Ford has ever built. A Yamaha-designed 3.0-liter V6 revving to 7,000 rpm, 220 horsepower, and a five-speed manual, wrapped in the most anonymous sedan of its decade. Nobody in 1991 expected the beige Taurus to pull away from them.

Ownership reality: This is the tricky one. The Yamaha engine is strong but the cam sprockets are a known failure point, parts are increasingly hard to source, and a bad one will drain you. Buy from an enthusiast owner with records or don’t buy at all.

Best Sleeper Cars Within $10k Budget

The tier where you start getting turbochargers and all-wheel drive.

2007 Subaru Legacy GT

A turbocharged flat-four making 243 horsepower with all-wheel drive, in a body most people can’t distinguish from a base Legacy. It’s the WRX’s mechanical sibling wearing a suit.

Ownership reality: These engines are known for ringland failure and turbo oil starvation, usually from deferred oil changes and banjo filter neglect. Get a compression and leakdown test before you buy. A good one is a bargain and a bad one is a boat anchor.

2010 Ford Fusion Sport

263 horsepower from a 3.5-liter V6 in a mid-size sedan nobody has ever looked at twice. Not exotic, not particularly special to drive, but quick, comfortable, and about as reliable as this list gets.

Ownership reality: Boring in the best way. Normal Ford parts prices.

2005 Saab 9-2X Aero

A Subaru WRX with Saab bodywork, sometimes called the Saabaru. 227 horsepower, turbocharged, all-wheel drive, and it looks like a hatchback for a librarian with unusual taste.

Ownership reality: The mechanicals are Subaru, so those parts are easy. The Saab-specific trim is not, and some pieces are effectively unobtainable. Buy one that’s already complete.

Acura TL Type S (2007-2008)

286 horsepower from a 3.5-liter V6, a good chassis, and the option of a six-speed manual. Honda reliability with real pace, in a body that reads as a nice sedan and nothing more.

Ownership reality: The most sensible pick in this tier. Watch for the usual high-mileage Honda automatic concerns and check that the timing belt has been done.

Exceptional Sleeper Cars Around $15k

Ford Taurus SHO (2010-2023)

A different car entirely from the nineties SHO, and arguably a better sleeper. A 365-horsepower twin-turbo EcoBoost V6, all-wheel drive, and about two and a half tons of anonymous American sedan. SHO stands for Super High Output, which is the only clue on the car.

Ownership reality: Heavy on brakes and tires. The EcoBoost V6 is strong but watch for water pump issues, which on this engine is an internal job and expensive.

Chevrolet Impala SS (2004-2005)

A supercharged 3.8-liter V6 in a front-drive sedan that looks like a rental car. It isn’t fast by modern standards, but it’s torquey, tough, and the disguise is total.

Ownership reality: The 3800 Series II is one of GM’s most durable engines. Supercharger coupler wear is the thing to check.

Volkswagen Golf GTI (2006-2014)

Next on our list is the Volkswagen Golf GTI – another seemingly average hatchback that delivers surprising performance. You’ll be amazed by how much fun driving can be with its agile handling coupled with turbocharged engines ranging from 200 to 230 horsepower.

Subaru WRX (2008-2014)

Up to 265 horsepower, all-wheel drive, and rally-derived competence. The hatchback body styles are the better disguise and the sedans less so.

Ownership reality: Almost every one has been modified, and a lot have been thrashed. Stock, unmolested examples are worth paying a premium for. Same engine caveats as the Legacy GT.

Buick Regal GS (2014)

A Buick. Genuinely a Buick, with a 2.0-liter turbo making 259 horsepower and 295 lb-ft, available with a manual gearbox and all-wheel drive in later years. It shares its bones with the Opel Insignia and drives far better than the badge suggests.

Ownership reality: GM parts, reasonable costs, and a car that most independent shops can handle.

Premium Sleeper Cars Under $20k

2007 BMW 335i

The Bronco can be credited as the one that started the all-out nostalgia wars. Introduced after a 25-year hiatus, the new Bronco entered the market in 2021 after much fanfare and subsequent delays. There has also been news regarding the 2.7L V6 engine’s valvetrain failures but that seems to have been an early production flaw.

The boxy Bronco competes head-to-head with the established Wrangler and it has garnered considerable fame since the day it was announced. Part of the reason behind its hype is the relatively affordable price which starts from just above $45,000 and goes as high as $72,000 (though you’d be lucky to get one at the MSRP).

Just like its primary competitor, the Bronco comes with an array of choices (four vs. two doors, hardtop or soft-tops, 4-cylinders vs. 6-cylinders). Unfortunately, 8-cylinders aren’t available, though the available options are punchy enough.

3. Toyota Land Cruiser

Nicknamed by some, especially the Arabs, as the “king of off-roaders” the Toyota Land Cruiser has a deep-rooted legacy in many countries. Unluckily for the Americans, we won’t be getting the true and full-fledged version of the Land Cruiser, instead, we will be offered the younger Land Cruiser which is based on the Lexus GX platform. Not as mighty and well-established as the LC300, the GX-based LC isn’t a wimp by any stretch of the imagination.

It follows the same footsteps as its rivals and draws inspiration from its decades-old ancestors. Kept rather compact to fit into the medium category, the new Land Cruiser will take direct aim at the Bronco and Wrangler. Toyota’s proven hybrid powertrain will also be featured on the new boxy SUV that will be assisted by a 2.4L 4-cylinder engine.

Toyota has tried to blend retro elements with modern niceties and the different trims offer various such features. An exact timeframe for the latest Land Cruiser hasn’t been revealed by Toyota.

4. Land Rover Defender

Land Rover’s Range Rover series is entirely for the affluent class and though it does have good off-roading capabilities, it seldom goes off the well-carpeted roads. 5. Mercedes-Benz G Class

The Geländewagen wagon is Germany’s definition of a boxy and tough off-roading SUV. Initially intended for military usage, the modern G-Wagon has come a long way from its ancestors of the late 20th century. Despite using the tried and tested body-on-frame platform, there is plenty of sophistication integrated into the latest generation that made its debut in 2019. Of course, the square design has its cons but it is what attracts countless high-networth individuals towards the G-Wagon.

With standard all-wheel drive and a punchy twin-turbo V8, Mercedes isn’t giving away its prized off-roader. The MSRP is well into six figures and that too without any add-ons and optional features. To top it all off, you’d be lucky to get your hands on this boxy SUV as the wait times hover around a year.

6. Toyota Sequoia

Speaking of Toyota Land Cruiser, it wouldn’t be fair to ignore the mighty Sequoia. The giant full-size SUV is as boxy as an SUV can get. Based on the new Tundra platform and powertrain, the latest generation has finally replaced the much-dated older generation. The design refreshment includes visible creases and of course a giant front grille.

The interior has been revitalized and the major changes are under the hood where a hybrid engine has taken the place of the good old V8 engine. The current generation has yet to demonstrate longevity, but Toyota’s history suggests it will. The price for the base SR5 variant starts at $62,000 and jacks up to $80,000 for the off-road-focused TRD Pro edition.

7. Chevrolet Suburban

The Chevy Suburban and its siblings namely the Yukon and Escalade are America’s homegrown full-size boxy SUVs that are also famous as the choice of various government agencies. The giant SUV has grown bigger over the passage of time and it has remained in production since 1946, making it one of the longest production vehicles in the world. The new generation still comes with a V8 which shouldn’t be surprising considering the mammoth size of the SUV. The turbodiesel is also an option that would be an ideal choice for users clocking high miles and towing with their Suburban.

The basic variant features a price tag of around $40,000, while the off-road-oriented trims like the TRD off-road and TRD Pro are priced at approximately $45,000 and $55,000.

9. Jeep Wagoneer & Grand Wagoneer

The Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer nameplates have been bought back by Jeep. The older Wagoneer’s stint lasted for a whole three decades (1963-1993) and in that period it managed to etch its memories into its users’ minds. So much so, that Jeep considered it worthwhile to bring its modern version.

The new version is tiered more toward luxury with a rather surprising price tag of $92,000 that goes all the way up to $110,000. It is, in essence, a direct rival of the Chevrolet Suburban and Escalade which we will cover in a moment. With such a long wheelbase, the comfortable ride quality is a no-brainer. However, the fuel economy is dismal to say the least. Despite being fitted with a twin-turbocharged V6 engine, the combined EPA rating is just 16 mpg.

Good news for the V8 fans as it can still be availed, though only with the base variant. The performance numbers, specifically, the 0-60 mph figure are quite impressive for an SUV of its size. Tech features and rich quality materials are also abundant which somewhat make up for the hefty price tag.

10: Rivian R1S

Many EV startups have come and gone but Rivian has, so far, withstood the test of time. The Rivian R1S, based on the R1T pickup truck, is the boxiest modern SUV. Despite being all-electric, the brand has maximized aerodynamics while preserving its boxy design. The integrated door handles and the flat underbody are two such examples.

Looks aren’t the only department that Rivian has nailed. The interior looks every bit as modern as the exterior and sophisticated tech features are plenty. The drivetrain is also plenty quick with 0-60 mph time of 3.1 seconds thanks largely to the quad-motor setup. Electric vehicles haven’t yet come at par with their gasoline rivals as far as price is concerned so the base price of $80,000 shouldn’t come as a surprise. The quad motor setup is even pricier as it is set at just above $90,000.

Bonus: KIA EV9

Boxy designs have also found their way to newly launched electric SUVs. The KIA EV9 is one such example that flaunts its squarish dimensions along with deep creases that run along the entire length of the vehicle. Both rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel drive would be available with an estimated range between 220 and 300 miles.

Not all details have been made public but the EV9 is likely to offer three rows making it attractive for families. The powertrains at the moment seem a bit sluggish but only time will tell the truth.
